Hola! Ciao! Konnichwa! This will be a short and sweet one. I’m in San Diego enjoying the beautiful weather and connecting with fellow coaches and trainers to create an Internet Client Getting Machine. Wanted to keep it simple and make it a reminder to appreciate simplicity.
Genius is Making the Complex Simple
“Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.” – Albert Einstein
“All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. -
Winston Churchill“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” – Dalai Lama
“When the solution is simple, God is answering.” – Albert Einstein
“There are no easy answers’ but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” – Ronald Reagan
“The business schools reward difficult complex behavior more than simple behavior, but simple behavior is more effective.” – Warren Buffett
“A confused mind says no.”
“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” – Confucius
Most solutions are simple. They may not be easy but they are simple. “To know and not to do is not yet to know.” When you start following the simple plan, you will get the results you are looking for. “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” – Jim Rohn
K.I.S.S. (Keep It Super Simple)
Keep the number of steps to a minimum. Most people add unnecessary steps to complicate it.
The more steps you have the more complicated it becomes.
People who have challenges working out have more steps than those who don’t. “I have to get up out of bed, brush my teeth, put on my workout clothes, put on my shoes, grab my water, get in the car, drive to the gym, check in the front desk.” You may have heard all of the things they have to do that it seems like a chore.
Vice versa, someone who has the habit of working out might say, “I just have to put on my shoes and go.” Which one is more likely to go?
Examples of Simple Strategies
Strategy for Business
1) Find out what your clients want
2) Go out and get it
3) Give it to them
Strategy for Losing Weight
1) Burn more calories than you take in
Strategy for Hitting Your Goal
1) Know What You Want
2) Know Why You Want It
3) Take Massive Action
4) Change Your Approach Until You Get It
Be aware of anywhere you are adding any unnecessary steps and how it impacts your results.
Love to hear your thoughts and please share any simple strategies you’ve found to be effective.

Cool post…I love it! You’re right, we tend to over complicate things to the point where they seem overwhelming and impossible at times.
I love your example of weight loss. There are so many diets out there that teach people to eat only certain foods, to eat foods in certain combinations, etc. It’s a perfect example because when all is said and done, we all know that weight loss will occur when we burn more calories than we eat.
Thanks for this slap to the side of the head….it was much needed

Yes, I’ve made many things way too complicated. When I’ve wanted to lose weight, I added extra steps by having chocolate cake instead of eat healthy and exercise.
Simplicity works. I had many of my coaching clients who come in to increase their income and in the process lose 20-30 pounds by simplifying the process.

I have a 15 step process and a 12 week course on keeping things simple – interested? As a trainer of technical trainers, I enjoyed thinking about your post and its implications.
The goal in performance improvement aids (OK – “instructions” for those who want it simple) is to keep it clear and simple. But as many of your quotes suggest, many tasks are not easy. So sometimes, the instructions creator (job aid author) is torn between making sure that all the “what ifs” are covered, while keeping the look and feel as simple as possible.
Sometimes I have discussed with classes how you can have a huge flowchart filled with arrows and actions, and most users shrink with dread. No matter that with a little effort it might simplify the task. Fact is, it doesn’t LOOK simple to see that monster diagram
But you can put the entire diagram online. It is completely hidden in the software algorithms. All one sees is the questions with YES/NO answers, and 5 screens later, they have gone through that monster diagram — but only the parts that apply to THEIR presenting problem.
There is a balance between usefulness and simplicity. Often sought, hard to capture.

Make things simple enough to be useful and not simpler.
I’m always interested in making things simple. Your course is appealing.
My feedback is the 15 Step Process may be unappealing to some. If you can chunk those steps into parts where each part has 3 or 4 steps, that would be appealing.
From a marketing standpoint, most people would rather by a 3 Step Process than a 15 Step Process. It can be the same process just in a simpler package.
Complexity = 9 with 3 steps
Complexity = 225 with 15 steps
Would love to know more about it Richard. Keep up the great work!

Hey Aiji ~ I love the idea of this post, and for the most part, agree. I agree that people have a tendency to over-complicate things, a lot! As a former Personal Trainer, I am all too familiar with the story you gave above about all the things a person has to do in the morning….just reading that is exhausting!
That being said, also from the PT perspective, while weight loss IS indeed about burning more calories than you take in….the issue is WAY more complex….with the emotional side and a variety of lifestyle factors that make it really not actually such a simple thing!
While I\’m mostly with you, because people really do make simple things complicated….I have to add that if it really IS complicated, more steps are often what will get you to end goal, right!?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reminding us all to just go out and get it!

Hi Beth!
Thanks for stopping by.
You are absolutely right. Some issues especially with weight loss have many layers to it.
Most people I coach lose weight as a result of the emotional healing they receive so they do not have to use it as a protection mechanism anymore.
I believe everyone should have a personal trainer in terms of their fitness because you have an expert to guide you through the process and points out what we don’t see.
The main point for simplicity is for those who are stuck and can’t seem to get in action by making it as simple as possible to get started.
Thanks Beth! Great to see you.

This is a great post and it reminds me of how much time we waste over analyzing things. You have provided so many quotes and they all echo the same message of simplicity. Thanks for the reminder
Thanks Brenda for stopping by. Reminders are so helpful. Out of sight, out of mind. All pain comes from forgetting who we are, what we’ve accomplished, and what we have.

A very important message. We as humans try to make things more complicated then they are. We try to figure out how it’s going to happen instead of just doing the simple things and expect it to happen.

So true, getting over beliefs of “It can’t be that easy!” or “It can’t be that simple!” is the key.

HI Eji
I am always telling people in coaching that work and learning is simple, but not necessarily easy. The more simple we can keep things, the more dynamic and powerful the attraction can be for greatness. I believe this because each component or idea of a work has in it everything you need to complete the task. We are the ones that screw it up with negative emotions and thoughts that draw the attraction in the opposite direction. Some of the most lovely and moving things in my life are the simplest – a smile – a flower – a sunset – a kiss – a tear of joy.
Thanks for this
Laura Morris
Thank you for bringing the attention to simplicity. I like your quote:“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” – Confucius so true.
How come the most simplest things are sometimes the hardest to learn and implement?
Have a fantastic week.

Beautiful, Eiji! Simplicity at its absolute best! When reading your initial set of quotes, I thought, “Geeez…he left out the classic.” But then you came through and just gave the classic KISS acronym a slight twist to the way I’ve always heard it — Keep It Simple Stupid. I think I like your version better! <<>
Anyway…your examples of simple strategies are perfect! I think I’ll print them out and tape them to my bathroom mirror!
Hello Eiji
I always wonder why some people prefer the complicated answers when the simple ones are enough.
.-= Peter Fuller MBA´s last blog ..Something You May Not Know About The Law of Attraction =-.
Hi Eiji – I always heard KISS Keep It Simple Stupid:) Either way it has the same meaning – there is no reason to over complicate things when it is not necessary! Thanks for such great info
.-= Glyna Humm´s last blog ..Facebook Friend or Foe =-.
My constant complaint against some people is that they tend to want to make the simple things complicated, refuse to follow simple instructions, and foul things up and blame other people. And then when there is something complicated these same people refuse to accept that some things are just complicated and need to be dealt with carefully and exactly by following the steps in tthe process. Not simply.
Treat simple things simply, and treat complicated things with the respect you give to the complex.
Thanks Eiji,
You do a great job of forcing us to think about keeping it simple (or ‘super simple’).
While many, especially myself, start out with the best of simple intentions, when the creative mind takes over, it’s easy to add more to a project than is necessary (the subconscious mind attempting to defy the Pareto Principle).
Your final examples are great! Do you have any other particular method you use when you realize you are adding too much to a process or idea?
Thanks,
Willy
