The 3 Vital Questions at the End of the Day

A Lesson in Personal Accountability

Last weekend I flew to Dallas to film for Teen Success Network which will make a difference to millions of teens who battle depression and suicide.

While I was there I had the privilege to hang out with very accomplished people last weekend.

One thing that geniuses have a knack for is to observe and recognize patterns. When you can recognize patterns, you can operate faster and more efficiently.

Using nuggets of wisdom from other people’s experience is one of the greatest shortcuts in life.

One man I got to know better was Jim Tilmon. He became the 3rd African American Pilot for American Airlines, the 5th overall in the US. Jim had a desire to be a pilot ever since he was little and had a picture of him in aviator glasses when he was 5 years old.

Genius Nugget: Geniuses play at what others call work. Your genius lies in what you love to do before anyone can tell you what to do or deprogram you.

Now being a pioneer for African American pilots is a huge accomplishment, it didn’t stop there. While working full time for American, Jim flew routes in the early mornings so that he could serve as NBC Chicago’s weatherman on the afternoon and evening broadcasts. Now both of these positions were full time positions plus he was married and had 3 children. Oh by the way, he also had time to be 1st chair clarinet in the Lake Forest symphony. He still currently serves as an Aviation expert for news channels. Jim was recently on CNN with Anderson Cooper on the Hudson collision.

It really questioned how big could I be playing? I got no excuses.

So I became a sponge and soaked up whatever I could to notice what was the difference that made all the difference. I noticed a key pattern and gained one nugget of wisdom over dinner that separates those who accomplish and those who don’t.

Pattern #1 – Personal Accountability

Those who accomplish hold themselves to a higher level of accountability and measure often.

Also I noticed a pattern in language that holds us personally accountable. The phrase “At the end of the day, …” is used more frequently by those who accomplish than those who don’t.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself at the End of the Day

1) What did I learn? – You are either growing or dying. Progress and happiness comes from growth. Growth comes from being outside your comfort zone.

2) What did I accomplish today to further my cause? – You are either moving forwards or backwards. There is no such thing is standing still.

3) What did I do to make someone’s life better today? – We are here to contribute and make a difference.

These questions address the 4 core actions of life purpose. We are here on earth to love, to live, to grow, and to give. Growth leads to happiness and progress. Giving leads to fulfillment and abundance

How would it improve your productivity? How will it help you to focus on what’s most important? How much more would you accomplish?

Jim shared with me that there were days when he didn’t want to answer those questions. I know I’ve had my fair share of those days and still do. The key he shared with me is to be compassionate on yourself and do your best the next day.

Do it for a week and notice the difference and share your wins in the comment section.

I’ve started asking myself and have a higher sense of personal accountability. It’s given me drive, determination, and focus to put value on each day by being able to answer these questions.

  9. I love this post…I have found these things to be true. When you look back at your day it gives you a perspective that is different than simply living it out. I am a huge proponent of living right in the hear and now…but I don’t always get it right. I don’t always flow…at times I get bogged down. By looking at my life through the lens of reality I am able to find both encouragement and a fresh perspective of how I may need to do things a bit differently the next day. If I don’t evaluate my day at all…chances are that I can string a number of non-productive days together without realizing it. Where does that get me? Nowhere that I want to be.

I even do this exercise a bit throughout the day just to keep me involved in the moment. When I am living each moment out to its fullest is when I find that I get way more done.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

These are such important concepts and I would like to believe that I implement them every day as part of who I am. I really appreciate the reminder. I promise that I will take a second look and really evaluate whether I am in fact living up to these goals!

    Awesome Eiji!!

I think the first question is really important “What did I learn?”. When you ask yourself that it’s really amazing what you come up with no matter how small or huge it may be. If you work out what you’ve learnt you’ve got all of tomorrow to implement it and then learn something else!

    Great stuff here!

I love and admire the work you\’re doing, and know that you\’re making an awesome change in the world…

We all have those days that seem to be very unproductive but I would have to say that there is probably not a day that goes by in which we have not had at least 1 positive answer to these 3 questions. Kind of puts everything in a better light, helping us to see that each and every day, we are getting better and moving forward.

  17. Great Post.Having a purpose in life is important.Knowing that you accomplished something at the end of the day is a great feeling. Thanks EiJi.
